“If we go back 25 years, there was a lot more intolerance in the vegan world,” Moby said. “There was a lot more militant us-and-them approach. And that, to a large extent, seems to have fallen by the wayside, both from a vegan perspective and from the non-vegan perspective. Vegans are perfectly happy now, for the most part, to hang out with people who don’t agree with them 100 percent And maybe one or two nights a week, carnivores seem pretty happy to go to a vegetarian restaurant.”
NYT, Can Vegans and Carnivores Get Along? Moby Thinks So
Moby, this is lovely.
For me and just about all vegetarians I know, it is absolutely not about being militant; it is about having productive discussions concerning different elements of vegetarianism: animal rights, the health of our environment, the health of our bodies, and making the right decisions. I strongly feel that being vegan and having dedication to this cause is entirely right for me, and I understand that this is my own personal way of living. Some people I have talked with aren’t concerned about these topics, or find any issue with being a carnivore. But really, the people I am closest to and call friends - vegans and carnivores alike - the thread that ties them all together is understanding and awareness to not be ignorant about their decisions.
I think if progress is to be made for the well being of our planet, our bodies, and other creatures in this world, this trend needs to continue. I understand striving to make a point by being loud and splashing paint and demonstrating in front of expensive stores - it definitely does get you noticed. It also alienates. When people feel threatened about their choices, they get defensive, and they stop listening with an open mind. We all have to work together and be understanding to get somewhere. This can’t be done with a view of it’s us vegetarians vs. those carnivores; it’s threatening, and a battle you can’t win. In general, about everything in life, befriend people and talk. These issues are gigantic and desire an open, ongoing discourse. We are not off the wall extremists when we are vegetarian, we are empathetic and loving. We do this first and foremost out of love, and that needs to be the centerpiece we focus on.
